A traditional 401(k) lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare. Health, dental and vision premiums and HSA contributions taken through a cafeteria (Section 125) plan lower both.

  • California uses tax year 2025 figures; 2026 figures weren't published when this was checked.

California 2025: 2025 FTB schedules (the 2026 inflation-indexed figures are not published yet; the EDD 2026 withholding schedules also still use the 2025 $5,706/$11,412 deductions). The 1% Behavioral (Mental) Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1M (all statuses) is folded in as the 13.3% bracket; MFS uses the single schedule. California does not recognize HSAs, so employee payroll HSA contributions are taxable (AB 781 conformity bill not enacted). Exemption credit phase-out above about $252k federal AGI ($504k MFJ), the renters' credit, CalEITC/YCTC and the 1.3% SDI payroll deduction are not modelled. Federal tax is 2026 withholding (IRS Pub. 15-T), not your final tax bill.
