Random Username Generator

This random username generator makes adjective-noun usernames such as calm_falcon or bright-harbor4821, or sample full names for mockups and test data — in bulk, with your own separator and an optional random number.

Small illustrative English lists, not culturally representative. No username availability checks. Participant splitting is available in List Randomizer.

How the names are generated

  • Usernameadjective + separator + noun (+ number 0–9999)
  • Possible usernames14 adjectives × 17 nouns = 238; × 10,000 numbers = 2,380,000
  • Sample full namefirst name + space + surname (8 × 8 = 64 combinations)

Every part is chosen independently with the browser's cryptographic random generator, using rejection sampling so each word is exactly equally likely. The separator defaults to an underscore; type a dot, dash or anything else to change it. The adjectives are friendly and the nouns are nature words — river, falcon, cedar, comet — so the results are safe to use anywhere.

Worked example: how often do repeats appear?

Because each name is drawn independently, a batch can contain the same name twice. The chance of at least one repeat (the "birthday problem"):

Batch sizeFull namesUsernames+ number
515%4%<0.01%
1052%17%<0.01%
2096%56%<0.01%
50>99%>99%0.05%
100>99%>99%0.21%
1,000>99%>99%19%

So for a list of 50 distinct test usernames, turn on "Append random number" — the repeat chance falls from >99% to 0.05%. For one username for yourself, repeats don't matter; just generate until one feels right.

Picking a username that works

Check the length limit

Generated usernames are at most 16 characters with a one-character separator, or 20 with a number. Instagram allows up to 30 characters and Discord up to 32, so they fit. X allows only 15, so a long pair like friendly_lantern (16) won't fit unless you drop the underscore by hand.

Use allowed characters

Underscores are accepted almost everywhere. Instagram and Discord also accept periods; X accepts only letters, numbers and underscores. Dashes are rejected by all three, so keep the default underscore unless you know the site allows something else.

Keep it anonymous

A random adjective-noun handle reveals nothing about you, unlike a name plus birth year. Don't reuse the same handle for accounts you want kept separate, and never treat a username as a secret — use the Password Generator for that.

For test data, the sample full names are deliberately few and plainly English. They're fine for a demo dashboard or design mockup. For realistic, varied datasets — different cultures, name lengths and characters — use a dedicated test-data library rather than this list.

Ways to use the output

Test accounts

Generate 50 usernames with numbers, download the .txt file and paste it into a spreadsheet column for seed data or QA sign-ups. Run the spreadsheet's remove-duplicates feature before importing.

Gaming and forum handles

Generate 20, shortlist the two or three you like, then check them on the platform. If they're taken, turn on the random number or swap the separator for a period.

Codenames and labels

Adjective-noun pairs make memorable, neutral names for projects, test servers, Wi-Fi networks or sprint teams. Type a space as the separator for names like "swift comet".

A username is public by design, so never reuse it as a password or security answer. The Password Generator and Passphrase Generator use the same kind of browser randomness with far larger pools — this tool's 2,380,000 possibilities are plenty for a handle and far too few for a secret.

Frequently asked questions

How does the username generator make names?+

It picks one of 14 adjectives and one of 17 nature-themed nouns at random and joins them with a separator — an underscore unless you type another one. That gives 238 possible usernames, or 2,380,000 with "Append random number" turned on.

Will two generated usernames ever be the same?+

Yes, picks are independent, so repeats happen. In a batch of 20 without numbers there is a 56% chance at least two match. With a number appended the chance in a batch of 100 drops to 0.21%. Generate a few extra and drop duplicates if you need a unique list.

Does it check whether a username is available?+

No. The generator works offline and doesn't contact Instagram, Xbox, Discord or any other service. Popular adjective-noun combinations are often taken, so adding the random number makes it far more likely your pick is free — then check on the site itself.

Can I use a dot, dash or no separator?+

Type any separator into the Separator box — a dot, a dash, or several characters. If you leave the box empty the generator uses an underscore, so it can't produce names with no separator at all; remove the underscores with find and replace if you need that.

Are the full names real people?+

They're combinations of 8 common English first names and 8 surnames, so a match with a real person is coincidence. With only 64 combinations they suit mockups and demo screens, not large test datasets — repeats are almost certain past a handful (52% chance of a repeat in 10).

Can it make team names?+

Yes. Team names mode makes names in the form “The <Adjective> <Plural noun>”, in Title Case — for example The Bold Falcons or The Swift Summits. To split people into random teams, use the List Randomizer.

How many names can I generate at once?+

Between 1 and 10,000 per click. Results appear one per line, so you can copy them or download a .txt file and paste it into a spreadsheet column.

How do I pick a good username?+

Keep it short, easy to spell and easy to say out loud, and leave out anything personal — your full name, birth year or hometown make you easier to track across sites. Check that the same name is free on the platforms you care about, and avoid strings of numbers that look like a date.

How long are the generated usernames?+

With a one-character separator they run from 10 characters (calm_cloud) to 16 (friendly_lantern). "Append random number" adds a number from 0 to 9999 with no leading zeros, so up to four more characters. X (Twitter) handles are limited to 15 characters of letters, numbers and underscores, so pick a shorter combination there.

Can I get usernames with capital letters?+

Not automatically — the word lists are all lowercase, so you get names like bold_falcon. Capitalize them by hand, or paste the list into a spreadsheet and use the PROPER function, which turns bold_falcon into Bold_Falcon; then find and replace the underscore if you want BoldFalcon.

Is anything I generate saved or sent?+

No. Names are picked in your browser with its cryptographic random number generator. Nothing is stored or uploaded, and the page makes no requests when you click Generate.
