Add Page Numbers to PDF

Add page numbers to a PDF without uploading it. Pick the corner, the format and the first number, skip pages such as the cover, check the preview and download the numbered copy.

Open a PDF to number

How it works

Numbering a PDF

  1. Open the PDF. It's read on your device, and the first pages are drawn with PDF.js for the preview.
  2. Pick one of six positions, the format, font size, color and margin, and the number to start at.
  3. Choose which pages get a number — for example 2- to leave the cover blank — and whether the skipped pages still count.
  4. Download. The numbers are written on top of the original pages with pdf-lib and the file is saved as name-numbered.pdf.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?+

No. The PDF is opened, previewed and numbered entirely in your browser, and the numbered copy is saved straight to your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

How do I skip the cover page?+

In “Pages to number”, type 2- (page 2 to the end). By default the first numbered page then reads 1. Tick “Count pages without a number” if you want it to read 2 instead, as if the cover were page 1. Ranges like 1-3, 5 or 4-10 work the same way.

Can I start numbering at a number other than 1?+

Yes. Set “Start at” to any whole number — useful when a PDF is one chapter of a longer document. {total} (as in “Page 3 of 10”) is the last number used, so the last numbered page always reads “10 of 10”.

What is Bates numbering?+

Bates numbering gives every page a unique, fixed-width identifier, such as ABC000001, ABC000002 — common in legal discovery and document productions. Choose Bates in Format, enter a prefix and the number of digits, and set the start number to continue from a previous production.

Can I use my own format?+

Choose Custom and type any text, with {n} where the page number goes and {total} for the last number, for example “Sheet {n} / {total}” or “Appendix B – {n}”.

Will the numbers appear in the right place on rotated or landscape pages?+

Yes. The tool reads each page's rotation and visible page area, so the number sits upright in the corner you picked as the page appears on screen — on portrait, landscape, rotated and cropped pages alike.

Will the rest of my PDF change?+

No. The original pages are kept as they are — text stays selectable and nothing is turned into an image. The numbers are added on top as real text in Helvetica, so they can be searched and copied too.

Can I use Roman numerals such as i, ii, iii?+

Not at the moment — numbers are written as 1, 2, 3. If your front pages would normally use Roman numerals, leave them unnumbered and number the main part from 1: for example, type 5- in “Pages to number” and page 5 reads 1.

Where can the page numbers go, and can I change their size or color?+

Pick any of six spots: top or bottom, at the left, center or right (bottom center is the default). Font size can be 4–72 pt (11 by default), the gap from the page edge 0–200 pt (28 by default; 72 pt is one inch), and you can choose any color.

Can numbers go on the outside corner for double-sided printing?+

No. Every numbered page uses the same position, so there's no automatic switch between left and right for odd and even pages. For a document printed on both sides, bottom center or top center looks right on every page.

How do I number several PDFs as one continuous sequence?+

Easiest is to join them first with Merge PDF and number the merged file. Or number each file on its own and set “Start at” to carry on from the previous one — if the first file ends at 24, start the next at 25.
