Salary to Hourly Calculator
This salary to hourly calculator turns a salary into an hourly rate, or an hourly rate into a salary, using your actual hours, workdays and paid weeks — or typical full-time hours for the US, UK, Canada or Australia — and compares two jobs side by side.
Compare two jobs
For example a salaried offer against an hourly contract with different hours.
How the conversion works
- Annualhourly × hours per week × paid weeks per year
- Weeklyhourly × hours per week
- Dailyweekly ÷ workdays per week
- Monthlyannual ÷ 12
Worked example
$52,000 a year, 40 hours a week, paid all 52 weeks: 40 × 52 = 2,080 paid hours, so $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25 an hour, $1,000 a week and $4,333.33 a month.
If only 48 weeks are paid, the same $52,000 is earned over 1,920 hours — $27.08 an hour. Freelancers should also allow for unbillable time; the Freelance Rate Calculator covers that.
Typical full-time hours and paid leave by country
These are the values the "Typical full-time defaults" picker fills in. They're common starting points, not the rule for every job — your contract, award or collective agreement decides your real hours. Paid leave is paid, so it stays inside the 52 paid weeks; only unpaid time off should lower them.
| Country | Hours / week | Minimum paid leave | Paid hours / year | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 40 | none (federal) | 2,080 | $60,000 = $28.85/h |
| United Kingdom | 37.5 | 5.6 weeks | 1,950 | £35,000 = £17.95/h |
| Canada | 40 | 2 weeks | 2,080 | $65,000 = $31.25/h |
| Australia | 38 | 4 weeks | 1,976 | $85,000 = $43.02/h |
- United States: 40 hours is the usual full-time week and the overtime threshold under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Federal law doesn't require paid vacation, so if your time off is unpaid, enter fewer paid weeks.
- United Kingdom: almost all workers get at least 5.6 weeks' paid holiday a year (28 days for a 5-day week, which can include bank holidays). 37.5 hours is a common contract; the Working Time Regulations limit the average week to 48 hours unless you opt out.
- Canada: the Canada Labour Code sets standard hours of 8 a day and 40 a week for federally regulated employers, with at least 2 weeks' paid vacation after a year. Provinces set their own rules — Ontario's overtime starts after 44 hours.
- Australia: the National Employment Standards set a maximum of 38 ordinary hours a week for full-time employees, plus reasonable additional hours, and 4 weeks' paid annual leave. Awards and agreements can set different ordinary hours.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?+
Divide the salary by the hours you're paid for in a year: hours per week × paid weeks per year. $52,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = $25 an hour. With 48 paid weeks it's $52,000 ÷ 1,920 = $27.08.
How do I convert an hourly rate to a yearly salary?+
Multiply the hourly rate by hours per week and by paid weeks per year. $30 × 37.5 hours × 52 weeks = $58,500 a year before tax.
Should I use 52 weeks?+
Use 52 if you're paid every week of the year, including paid holiday — typical for salaried jobs. If some weeks off are unpaid, as with many contracts and hourly jobs, enter only the weeks you're paid for.
Why does the daily rate depend on workdays?+
A day's pay is a week's pay divided by the days you work. 40 hours over 5 days is 8 hours a day; over 4 days it's 10, so the daily rate is higher for the same hourly pay.
How do I convert salary to hourly in the UK?+
Divide the annual salary by 52 weeks and by your contracted weekly hours. For a common 37.5-hour week that's 1,950 hours a year, so £35,000 is £17.95 an hour. Almost all UK workers are entitled to at least 5.6 weeks' paid holiday; because it's paid, it doesn't reduce the 52 weeks.
How do I convert hourly to salary in Australia?+
Multiply the hourly rate by your ordinary weekly hours and by 52. The National Employment Standards cap full-time ordinary hours at 38 a week, so $30 an hour is 30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280 a year (in Australian dollars). The 4 weeks' paid annual leave is already inside those 52 paid weeks. Casual rates include a loading instead of paid leave, so use the weeks you actually work.
What do the country defaults fill in?+
Hours per week, workdays and paid weeks for a typical full-time job in the United States (40 h), United Kingdom (37.5 h), Canada (40 h) or Australia (38 h), and the matching currency. They are typical values, not the rule for every job: your contract, award or collective agreement may say otherwise, and every field stays editable.
How much is $20 an hour a year?+
Working 40 hours a week and paid for all 52 weeks, $20 an hour is $41,600 a year — $3,466.67 a month or $800 a week before tax. If two weeks a year are unpaid, use 50 paid weeks and it drops to $40,000.
How many working hours are in a year?+
A full-time 40-hour week paid for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, the figure commonly used to convert US salaries. A 37.5-hour week is 1,950 hours. Public holidays and paid leave don't reduce it because they're paid; only unpaid time off does.
How do I convert a monthly salary to an hourly rate?+
Multiply the monthly pay by 12 to get the annual figure, then divide by the hours you're paid for in a year. $5,000 a month is $60,000 a year; over 2,080 hours that's $28.85 an hour. Don't multiply a month by 4 weeks — a month averages about 4.33 weeks.
Is this my take-home pay?+
No. Every figure is gross pay before income tax, social insurance, pension contributions and other deductions.
Is anything I enter saved or sent?+
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is stored or uploaded.
