Image Format Converter
Convert JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG images to JPG, PNG or WebP — one file or a whole batch, with quality control, a background colour for transparency and an optional max size.
JPG vs PNG vs WebP
Which format to pick depends on what's in the image and where it's going.
| JPG | PNG | WebP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy — you choose the quality | Lossless — every pixel kept | Lossy or lossless (this tool saves lossy, with your quality) |
| Transparency | No — filled with a background colour | Yes | Yes |
| Animation | No | Only as APNG, which this tool doesn't make | Yes, but this tool saves the first frame only |
| Typical size | Small for photos | Large for photos, small for flat graphics | Usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality |
| Best for | Photos, email, forms that only take JPG | Screenshots, logos, text, anything needing exact pixels | Websites — photos and graphics, with or without transparency |
| Support | Everywhere | Everywhere | All current browsers; some older apps, editors and upload forms reject it |
How it works
- Each file's type is read from its first bytes, not just its name, so a PNG renamed to
.jpgis still handled as a PNG. - The image is decoded by your browser in a background worker, with its camera orientation applied. Files the browser can't open get a clear message in the list instead of a blank download.
- If you set a max size, larger images are shrunk in halving steps for a sharp result; smaller ones are left alone. SVGs are drawn straight at the size you ask for, since vectors scale cleanly.
- It's saved as JPG (with your background colour behind any transparency), PNG or WebP (transparency kept). Only the extension changes in the name, e.g.
photo.webp→photo.png.
Worked example
A 4,032 × 3,024 px phone photo saved as IMG_2041.webp, converted to JPG at quality 85 with a max width of 1,920 px:
- Scale: 1,920 ÷ 4,032 ≈ 0.476, so the output is 1,920 × 1,440 px.
- It's saved as
IMG_2041.jpg. - The list then shows both file sizes and the percentage change, so you can try another quality if it is too big.
With “Keep original” instead, it stays 4,032 × 3,024 px and only the format changes.
What it doesn't do
Hit a file size
This converter uses the quality you set. If a form needs the file under, say, 200 KB, use the Image Compressor, which searches for the best quality that fits.
Exact sizes and cropping
Here you can only cap the width and height. For exact pixels, percentages, social media sizes, cropping or rotating, use the Image Resizer.
HEIC, TIFF and animation
iPhone HEIC photos go through the HEIC to JPG converter. TIFF opens only in Safari. GIF and animated WebP become a still image of the first frame. AVIF needs a recent browser.
Frequently asked questions
Is anything uploaded?+
No. Every image is decoded, resized and re-encoded in your browser, in a background worker, and the downloads are created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is kept after you close the page.
How do I convert WebP to PNG or JPG?+
Drop the WebP files in, choose PNG or JPG under “Convert to”, and download each file or all of them as a ZIP. PNG keeps transparency and every pixel exactly; JPG is smaller for photos but fills transparent areas with the background colour (white by default).
Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?+
PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly, and photos have millions of slightly different pixels that don't compress well that way. JPG throws away detail your eye barely notices, so a photo is often 3 to 10 times smaller as a JPG. Converting a JPG to PNG can't restore detail the JPG already lost — it only makes the file bigger. Use PNG for screenshots, logos and graphics with flat colours and sharp edges, where it's often smaller than JPG and has no blur around text.
Does WebP support transparency?+
Yes. WebP keeps transparency in both its lossy and lossless forms, so a transparent PNG converted to WebP stays transparent and is usually much smaller. JPG is the one that can't: when you convert to JPG, transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick.
What quality should I use for JPG or WebP?+
80 to 90 looks the same as the original for most photos and is far smaller than 100. Below about 60 you'll start to see blur and blocky patches, especially around text and sharp edges. The before and after size is shown for each file, so you can try a few values.
Can I convert animated GIFs?+
Only the first frame is converted — the result is a still image. The same goes for animated WebP. Browsers can't save animation from a canvas, so this tool doesn't try.
Can I convert HEIC photos from an iPhone?+
Use the HEIC to JPG converter for those (heic.northlane.live) — most browsers can't open HEIC on their own, so it brings its own decoder. It also runs in your browser and converts to JPG or PNG in batches.
Does converting remove EXIF and GPS data?+
Yes. Each new file is drawn fresh, so camera details, dates and GPS location aren't copied. The photo's orientation is applied to the pixels first, so phone photos still come out the right way up.
