Image Resizer & Cropper

Resize JPG, PNG and WebP images to exact pixels, a percentage or a longest side, crop to any aspect ratio, and save as JPG, PNG or WebP — one image or a whole batch.

How it works

  1. The image is decoded with its camera orientation applied, so phone photos come out the right way up.
  2. Your rotation, flip and crop are applied — the crop always comes before resizing.
  3. The new size is worked out: Fit inside keeps the whole picture inside the box, Fill & crop fills the box exactly and trims the overflow evenly, Stretch forces the exact size. Sizes are rounded to whole pixels.
  4. When shrinking, the picture is halved step by step with high-quality smoothing, then drawn at the final size — which avoids the jagged, shimmering look of one big jump.
  5. It's saved as JPG (with your background colour behind any transparency), PNG or WebP (transparency kept), named like photo-1080x1080.jpg.

Worked example

A 4,000 × 3,000 px landscape photo, beach.jpg, resized to an Instagram portrait post of 1,080 × 1,350 px with Fill & crop:

  • Scale to fill: the larger of 1,080 ÷ 4,000 and 1,350 ÷ 3,000 = 0.45.
  • The part kept is 2,400 × 3,000 px — the centre of the photo, trimming 800 px from each side.
  • Drawn in 2 steps: 1,200 × 1,500 → 1,080 × 1,350 px.
  • Saved as beach-1080x1350.jpg.

With Fit inside instead, nothing is trimmed and the result is 1,080 × 810 px — the full photo, but not the 4:5 shape.

Social media image sizes

These are the presets in the tool. Pick one and the image is filled and centre-cropped to that exact size — crop it yourself first if the subject isn't in the middle.

Checked October 7, 2026 against: Instagram Help Center (photo resolution), Meta Ads Guide (Instagram Stories), Facebook Help Center (Page cover photo), X Help Center (profile and header photos), X Business creative ad specifications, LinkedIn Help (background photo), YouTube Help (custom thumbnails), YouTube Data API documentation (channel banners) and the U.S. Department of State (digital image requirements). Platforms change their layouts — check the platform's own help page if a size looks off. A visa photo must also meet the head-size and background rules; this tool only sets the pixel size.

Limits and honest caveats

Canvas size

Browsers cap how big an image they can draw: about 268 megapixels (16,384 × 16,384) in Chrome, Edge and Safari on a computer, and 16.7 megapixels (4,096 × 4,096) on iPhone and iPad. Very large outputs show an error explaining this.

Formats

JPG, PNG and WebP open everywhere. GIF (first frame only), AVIF and BMP work if your browser can decode them and are saved as PNG by default. HEIC photos need the HEIC converter first.

File size

The exact byte size is shown after resizing. If a form also has a KB limit — the US visa photo must be 240 kB or less — run the result through the image compressor.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Instagram post be?+

1080 × 1080 px for a square post, 1080 × 1350 px for a portrait (4:5) post, and 1080 × 566 px for landscape (1.91:1). Instagram keeps photos up to 1,080 px wide, and anything outside 1.91:1 to 4:5 gets cropped. Stories and reels are 9:16 — 1080 × 1920 px.

How do I resize an image without stretching it?+

Keep the aspect-ratio lock on and type just the width (or height) — the other side follows the image's shape. If you need an exact size like 1080 × 1350, unlock it and choose “Fill & crop”, which trims the overflow evenly instead of squashing the picture, or crop first to pick exactly what's kept.

How do I resize an image by percentage?+

Choose Percent and type a value: 50% turns a 4000 × 3000 photo into 2000 × 1500 px (a quarter of the pixels). Values over 100% enlarge it, unless “Don't enlarge smaller images” is ticked.

Does resizing remove EXIF metadata?+

Yes. Every output is drawn fresh on a canvas, so camera details, dates and GPS location aren't copied into the new file. The photo's orientation is applied to the pixels first, so it still displays the right way up.

Will resizing reduce quality?+

Shrinking keeps images sharp: the tool halves the size in steps, averaging pixels each time, before the final size. Enlarging can't add detail, so a small image made bigger looks soft — that's why “Don't enlarge” is on by default. For JPG and WebP you also pick the compression quality (90 by default).

What's the biggest image I can resize?+

Files up to 50 MB. The output and the in-between steps must fit the browser's canvas limit: 268 megapixels (16,384 × 16,384) on desktop Chrome, Edge and Safari, but only 16.7 megapixels (4,096 × 4,096) on iPhone and iPad. If a size is too big you'll see a clear message instead of a blank file.

Are my images uploaded?+

No. Decoding, cropping, resizing and encoding all happen in your browser, in a background worker. Nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is stored after you close the page.
