Gold & Silver Value Calculator

Use this gold value calculator to see what your gold or silver jewelry, scrap or coins are worth: the melt value from the weight and karat, the price per gram for every purity, and what a fair buyer offer looks like.

Your metal

Look for a stamp such as 14K, 585 or 925, usually on a clasp or inside a ring.

Melt value

Enter today's gold price per troy ounce to see what your gold is worth.

Melt value is the worth of the pure metal only. Gemstones, craftsmanship, brand and collector value aren't included, and solder or clasps can make jewelry slightly less pure than its stamp. Not financial advice.

How gold value is calculated

  1. Convert the weight to grams.
  2. Multiply by the purity to get grams of pure metal (14k is 14 ÷ 24 = 58.3%).
  3. Divide by 31.1035 to get troy ounces, then multiply by the spot price.

value = grams × purity ÷ 31.1035 × price per troy oz

Before you sell

  • Sort pieces by karat so each is weighed and priced separately.
  • Weigh them yourself in grams if you can, and ask the buyer to weigh them in front of you.
  • Get at least three quotes and compare each as a percentage of melt value.
  • Keep items with designer, antique or gemstone value separate — a jeweler may pay more than scrap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out what my gold is worth?+

Multiply the weight in grams by the purity, divide by 31.1035 to get troy ounces of pure gold, and multiply by the spot price. For example, at an illustrative $4,000.00 an ounce, 10 g of 14k gold holds 5.83 g of pure gold, worth $750.18.

What is the price of 14k gold per gram?+

The spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035 × 14/24. At $4,000.00 an ounce that's $75.02 a gram, compared with $128.60 for 24k and $96.45 for 18k. Enter today's price in the calculator for current figures.

How much will a buyer actually pay for scrap gold?+

Less than melt value, because buyers need to cover refining and make a profit. Offers vary widely: dedicated gold buyers and refiners usually pay more of the melt value than pawn shops or mail-in services. Get several quotes and use the payout field to see what each one means in percent.

What's the difference between a troy ounce and a regular ounce?+

Gold and silver are priced per troy ounce, which is 31.10 g. A regular (avoirdupois) ounce on a kitchen scale is 28.35 g, about 9% lighter. Mixing them up undervalues your metal.

What do the numbers stamped on jewelry mean?+

They give the share of pure metal in parts per thousand. 585 is 14k (58.5% gold), 750 is 18k, 916 is 22k and 417 is 10k. For silver, 925 is sterling (92.5% silver). The calculator lists 6 gold and 4 silver purities.

Why is my jewelry worth less than the value of the gold in it?+

To a scrap buyer it often isn't worth more than its metal: stones, clasps and solder add weight but little or no metal value, and design or brand value only counts if you sell to a jeweler or collector.

What is a pennyweight or a tola?+

A pennyweight (dwt), used by many US gold buyers, is 1.555 g, or 1/20 of a troy ounce. A tola, common in South Asia and the Gulf, is 11.664 g.

Where do I find today's gold price?+

Search "gold price" or "silver price" on Google, or check any major bullion dealer. Prices change throughout the trading day, so enter the figure just before you compare quotes.

Is my information stored?+

No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and the tool doesn't fetch prices or send anything you type to a server.
