Frequently asked questions
Is the picker really random?+
Yes. It uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator (the same source used for passwords and encryption keys), with rejection sampling so every name has exactly the same chance. Shuffling uses the Fisher–Yates method, which makes every order equally likely.
Does the spinning wheel decide the winner?+
No. The winner is chosen first, then the wheel animates to land on that name. The animation is just for show and can't change the result.
How are teams balanced?+
The list is shuffled, then names are dealt out one at a time like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one. Choose a number of teams, or a team size — 10 people in teams of 4 becomes teams of 4, 3 and 3.
What happens to duplicate names?+
Names that appear more than once (ignoring capital letters and extra spaces) are removed by default and listed so you can check them. Tick “Keep duplicate names” to keep every copy — useful when a name repeated means extra entries.
Can I import a class list or spreadsheet?+
Yes. Import a CSV or text file. If it has several columns, choose which one holds the names. Everything is read on your device.
Can I use this for a prize draw or raffle?+
You can use it for informal draws, but it isn't a certified raffle or lottery system and keeps no audit record. Check the rules that apply to your draw.
Can I pick several names at once without repeats?+
Yes. Enter how many to pick and they're drawn together, so no name comes up twice in one draw. To keep drawing over several rounds without repeats, tick “Remove picked names from the list”; the Restore button puts them back when you're done.
What are the chances of each name being picked?+
Every name has the same chance: 1 in the number of names for a single pick, or the number picked ÷ the number of names for several. Drawing 3 winners from 30 names gives each person a 3 in 30 (10%) chance. A name repeated with “Keep duplicate names” ticked gets one extra chance per copy.
How many names can I use?+
Up to 10,000. Paste one name per line, or separate them with commas if they're all on one line. The spinning wheel appears for single picks from up to 100 names; larger lists show the result without it.
Can I save or print the results?+
Copy any result to the clipboard. Shuffled lists and teams can also be downloaded as a CSV or printed. Each pick, shuffle and team split is listed under “This session” with the time (the latest 50), until you close or refresh the page.
Is my list saved or uploaded?+
Nothing is uploaded. Your list is only saved — in this browser's storage, on this device — if you tick “Remember this list on this device”; untick it to delete it.
