Lorem Ipsum Generator
This lorem ipsum generator makes placeholder text by paragraphs, sentences, words or an exact number of characters — in classic Latin-style lorem ipsum or readable English — and copy it as plain text or HTML.
Locally generated placeholder text; not meaningful Latin.
How the generator builds text
- Wordseach word drawn at random from the lorem ipsum (or English) word list
- Sentence12 words, first letter capitalized, ending in a period
- Paragraph4 sentences = 48 words
- Charactersrandom words joined with spaces, cut to exactly N characters
Words are picked independently with your browser's cryptographic random generator, so two runs almost never match. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line. HTML format wraps each paragraph in its own paragraph tag and escapes special characters.
Locally generated placeholder text; not meaningful Latin. The Latin option uses the vocabulary of the classic passage; tick "Start with Lorem ipsum" to make the first two words the familiar opening.
How much to generate
One paragraph here is 48 words, so divide your target length by 48 and round up:
| Layout | Words | Paragraphs | or Sentences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product card blurb | 40 | 1 | 4 |
| Landing page section | 150 | 4 | 13 |
| Short blog post | 600 | 13 | 50 |
| Long-form article | 1,500 | 32 | 125 |
For fixed-length fields, Characters mode gives an exact count, spaces included — useful for stress-testing these limits:
- 155 Meta description
- 280 Post on X
- 160 SMS segment (GSM-7)
- 60 Page title
Where lorem ipsum comes from
A garbled line of Cicero
The standard text is a scrambled extract from book 1 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written in 45 BC. The source line begins:
Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…
It means roughly "Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain." Dropping letters and words turned dolorem ipsum into the familiar Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. The result has Latin-looking word shapes and lengths but no meaning.
Why designers still use it
- It doesn't pull focus. Reviewers judge spacing, hierarchy and type instead of editing the copy.
- It's obviously unfinished. Nobody mistakes it for approved text, which makes it easy to spot if it slips into a release.
- It wraps like real prose. Mixed short and long words show how lines break, unlike "text text text".
Its downside is the same as its strength: Latin word lengths differ from English, and filler hides layouts that only work at one length. Switch to English placeholder to see realistic English wrapping, and test the shortest and longest real copy before you ship.
Before launch, search your templates for "lorem" and "ipsum" — leftover filler on a live page looks careless and is thin content in the eyes of search engines.

Which mode to use
Paragraphs
Article bodies, blog templates and CMS previews. Pick HTML format to paste straight into a template, or plain text for a design tool like Figma, where each blank line starts a new paragraph.
Sentences
Card descriptions, testimonials, captions and alerts. Sentences come back on one line, separated by spaces, so two or three make a realistic short blurb.
Words
Headings, buttons, menu items and tags. Try 2, 5 and 12 words in the same slot to see where a heading wraps or a button overflows. Word output has no capital letter or ending period.
Characters
Fields with a hard limit: form inputs, database columns, SMS templates and social previews. Generate the limit, then one over it, to check truncation and validation messages.
Real content is rarely uniform. Every generated sentence is the same length, so also test with your longest real headline and a one-word title. Translations into languages such as German often run noticeably longer than English, which matters more than any choice of filler.
Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?+
Nothing, on purpose. It is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC). "Lorem" is the tail end of the word dolorem (pain), cut off mid-word. The text looks like language, so a layout reads naturally, but nobody gets distracted by what it says.
How many words are in a paragraph of lorem ipsum?+
Here every sentence has 12 words and every paragraph has 4 sentences, so one paragraph is 48 words. For a 500-word mockup, ask for 11 paragraphs; for 1,000 words, 21. Use Words mode if you need an exact word count.
Can I generate an exact number of characters?+
Yes. Choose Characters mode and enter the count — the output is cut to exactly that many characters, spaces included. It is handy for testing a 155-character meta description slot, a 280-character post or a fixed-width table cell.
Can I get English placeholder text instead of Latin?+
Tick "English placeholder". The words come from a short list of plain English words, so the result reads like loose English rather than Latin. It is still random filler, not real sentences — use it when stakeholders find Latin confusing or when you want to check how English word lengths wrap.
Does it start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"?+
Only if you tick "Start with Lorem ipsum". The first two words are then replaced by "Lorem ipsum"; the rest is randomly drawn from the classic lorem ipsum vocabulary, so it won't reproduce the full standard passage word for word. The option applies to Latin output only.
How do I get lorem ipsum with HTML tags?+
Set Format to HTML. Each paragraph is wrapped in its own paragraph tag, with characters escaped, ready to paste into a template. Markdown output is plain paragraphs separated by blank lines, which Markdown already treats as paragraphs.
What is the maximum amount of text I can generate?+
Up to 10,000 of whatever unit you choose — 10,000 paragraphs, sentences, words or characters. Ten thousand paragraphs is about 480,000 words, which is far more than any layout needs, so large outputs may take a moment to render.
Why do designers use lorem ipsum instead of real text?+
Placeholder text lets people judge a layout — type size, line length, spacing — without getting pulled into reading and editing the words. Its mix of short and long words also wraps more like real prose than repeating "text text text". The main risk is shipping it by accident, so search your pages for "lorem" before launch.
How do I insert lorem ipsum in Word or VS Code?+
In Microsoft Word, type =lorem() on a new line and press Enter; =lorem(3,5) gives 3 paragraphs of 5 sentences. In VS Code and other editors with Emmet, type lorem and press Tab, or lorem100 for 100 words. This generator is handy when you need an exact character count, English filler or HTML paragraphs instead.
Is lorem ipsum free to use?+
Yes. It derives from a text Cicero wrote over 2,000 years ago, which is in the public domain, and the filler made here is randomly assembled words with no owner. You can use it in commercial designs, templates and client mockups without credit.
Is the text generated on a server?+
No. The words are picked in your browser with its built-in cryptographic random number generator. Nothing you generate is sent anywhere or stored; Copy and Download text work entirely on your device.
