Your text stays on your device
Drafts, essays and contracts are often private. These tools do their work in your browser, so the text you paste isn't uploaded or stored, and there's no account. The one exception is optional: if you fill in a citation from a DOI, the Citation Generator looks that DOI up in a public registry such as Crossref. Passwords and passphrases are generated with your browser's cryptographic random number generator.
Scores are guides, not rules
Readability formulas count sentence length and syllables. They can't tell whether a sentence makes sense, so a low grade level doesn't guarantee clear writing. Use the score to find long, tangled sentences, then judge each one yourself. The same goes for keyword density: there's no magic percentage, and text written for readers usually does better than text written for a number.
Citation styles change between editions. Our generator formats references with the official Citation Style Language styles for APA 7th, MLA 9th and Chicago 18th editions. For the rules behind them, read how to cite a website in APA, MLA and Chicago.

Frequently asked questions
How many words is a five-minute speech?+
At a typical speaking pace of about 130 words a minute, five minutes is roughly 650 words. Paste your script into the Word Counter to check its length.
Do spaces count as characters?+
Usually yes. Social platforms and most form limits count spaces and punctuation. The Character Counter shows counts with and without spaces.
What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?+
Scores usually run from 0 to 100, and higher is easier. 60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read comfortably; academic and legal text often scores below 30.
Which citation style should I use?+
Use the one your instructor, journal or publisher asks for. APA is common in psychology, education and the social sciences, MLA in literature and the humanities, and Chicago in history and publishing.
Is a passphrase safer than a password?+
A passphrase of several truly random words can be as strong as a shorter random password and is much easier to remember. Strength comes from randomness and length, so let a generator pick the words rather than choosing them yourself.
What is lorem ipsum?+
Scrambled Latin placeholder text, adapted from a work by Cicero, that designers use to fill a layout before the real copy is ready.
Is the text I paste stored anywhere?+
No. The counters, checkers and converters run in your browser and don't upload your text. Only the optional DOI lookup in the Citation Generator contacts an outside service, and it sends just the DOI.
