Tip Calculator & Bill Splitter
This tip calculator works out the tip, tax and any service charge on a bill, then splits it evenly or by shares to the cent. Traveling? Enter an exchange rate and your card's foreign transaction fee to see what each person pays in your own currency.
Tax applies to the entered pre-tax bill, and to the service charge if you mark it taxable. A service charge can be a percent or a fixed amount, and you can skip the tip when the service charge replaces it. Tips can apply before or after tax. To convert, enter how much one unit of the bill's currency is worth in yours, plus any foreign transaction fee your card charges; the rate is yours to supply, nothing is looked up. Weighted shares divide the total; rounding differences remain visible.

How the tip and split are calculated
- Service chargebill × service % (or the fixed amount you enter)
- Tax(bill + service charge if taxed) × tax %
- Tip(bill, or bill + tax) × tip % — or your fixed tip, or 0 when a service charge replaces it
- Totalbill + tax + service charge + tip
- Each persontotal × person's share ÷ sum of shares
- In your currencyamount × exchange rate × (1 + card fee % ÷ 100)
Every amount is rounded to the cent as it is worked out. With Exact rounding, the total is shared out in whole cents and any leftover cent goes to the share with the largest remainder, so the amounts always add back to the total. Round up and Round down work in whole currency units, and the difference from the total is shown.

Worked example: dinner for three
A $84.50 bill, 8.875% sales tax, 18% tip on the pre-tax amount:
| Split | Person 1 | Person 2 | Person 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Even, exact | $35.74 | $35.74 | $35.73 |
| Shares 1, 1, 2 | $26.80 | $26.80 | $53.61 |
| Even, round up | $36.00 | $36.00 | $36.00 |
Tax is $7.50 and the tip $15.21, for a total of $107.21. Tipping on the after-tax amount instead raises the tip to $16.56. Rounding up collects $108.00, $0.79 more than the bill.
Service charges, tax and paying abroad
Percent or fixed charge
A 12.5% service charge on a £120.00 bill is £15.00. Some places add a flat fee per table or per booking instead — choose Fixed amount and enter it, and a £15.00 charge gives the same £135.00 total. With "Skip the tip" the tip is zero whenever a service charge is entered; with "Tip as well", a further 10% brings the bill to £147.00.
Taxed service charges
An automatic 18% gratuity on a $200.00 group dinner with 8% tax: if the charge isn't taxed, tax is $16.00 and the total $252.00. If it is taxed, tax rises to $18.88 and eight people pay $31.86 each from $254.88. A tip is never taxed in this calculator.
Converting to your currency
That £135.00 London bill at 1.27 dollars per pound is $171.45. A card with a 3% foreign transaction fee charges $176.59 — $5.14 more — so each of two people pays $88.30. Enter the rate yourself; nothing is looked up.
How much to tip
| Situation | Common practice |
|---|---|
| US sit-down restaurant | 15–20% of the pre-tax bill; 20% for good service is now common. |
| US bar | $1–2 a drink, or 15–20% of the tab. |
| Taxi or rideshare | 15–20% of the fare in the US. |
| US large group | Many restaurants add an automatic gratuity, often 18–20%. Check the bill before tipping again. |
| UK restaurant | A discretionary service charge of 10–12.5% is often added. You can ask for it to be removed; if none is added, 10–12.5% is usual. |
| Japan | Tipping isn't customary and can cause confusion. |
In the US, the IRS treats a mandatory charge such as an automatic gratuity as a service charge — wages, not a tip — because the customer didn't choose it. In the UK, an optional service charge is outside the scope of VAT but a compulsory one is taxable, and since 1 October 2024 employers must pass all tips and service charges to workers in full. When a card terminal abroad offers to charge you in your home currency, decline: that conversion uses the merchant's rate, which usually costs more than paying in the local currency and letting your card convert it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?+
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. An 18% tip on a $84.50 bill is $84.50 × 0.18 = $15.21. The preset buttons fill in 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%, or you can type any percent or a fixed tip amount instead.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?+
In the US, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual range for table service, with more for great service or a large, complicated order. On $84.50 that's $15.21 at 18% or $16.90 at 20%. Customs differ abroad: in many countries service is included in the price or a smaller tip is normal, so check local practice when you travel.
How do I work out a tip in my head?+
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then scale it. 10% of $84.50 is $8.45; double it for 20% ($16.90), or add half of the 10% figure to itself for 15%. The calculator does the exact figure, including tax and a split.
Can I leave a fixed tip amount instead of a percentage?+
Yes. Type the amount in "Custom tip amount" and it replaces the tip percent; set it back to 0 to use the percent again. A $15.00 tip on the $84.50 bill with 8.875% tax makes a total of $107.00, which still splits evenly or by shares.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?+
Etiquette guides usually say before tax, because tax isn't part of the service. The difference is small: on $84.50 with 8.875% tax, an 18% tip is $15.21 before tax and $16.56 after. Pick either under Tip basis.
How do I split a bill with tip between friends?+
Enter the number of people. The total is divided to the cent and any leftover cent is given to one person, so the shares always add up exactly. $84.50 plus 8.875% tax and an 18% tip is $107.21, which splits three ways as $35.74, $35.74, $35.73.
Can I split a bill unevenly?+
Yes. Type one share per person, separated by commas, and the total is divided in proportion. With shares 1, 1, 2 the same $107.21 bill becomes $26.80, $26.80, $53.61 — useful when one person ordered for two or a couple pays together.
What does rounding up do?+
Round up makes each person's share a whole currency unit, so nobody hands over coins. Three people paying $36.00 each collect $108.00 on a $107.21 bill; the extra $0.79 is shown so you can add it to the tip. Round down shows the shortfall instead.
Do I still tip if there's a service charge?+
Usually not. A service charge — often 12.5% in UK restaurants, or an automatic gratuity for large groups in the US — normally stands in for the tip. Choose "Skip the tip" and the tip is set to zero whenever a service charge is entered. Choose "Tip as well" if you want to add more on top.
Is a service charge taxed?+
It depends on where you are. Many US states tax mandatory service charges, and in the UK a compulsory service charge is subject to VAT while an optional one is not. Set "Service charge taxed" to Yes and the tax percent is applied to the bill plus the service charge; the tip itself is never taxed.
How do I convert the bill into my currency abroad?+
Enter how much one unit of the bill's currency is worth in yours, and your card's foreign transaction fee. A £135.00 London bill at 1.27 dollars per pound with a 3% card fee costs $176.59, of which $5.14 is the fee. The tool doesn't look rates up — use the rate your bank or card network shows.
Is anything I enter saved or sent?+
No. The bill, shares and exchange rate are calculated in your browser and are not stored or uploaded, and no exchange rate is fetched. Download summary creates a text file on your device; nothing leaves it otherwise.
